How to Choose the Right Luggage Size

How to Choose the Right Luggage Size

Why Picking the Right Luggage Size Matters

Choosing the right luggage for your trip is more important than you think. Go too small and your suitcase is bursting at the seams before you even try to bring home souvenirs. Pick luggage that’s way too big means you’re paying for unnecessary baggage fees and lugging around a giant suitcase for nothing. Let’s break this down to help choose the right luggage for that next trip-business or leisure.

Carry-On vs. Checked Luggage: What’s the Difference?

Before diving into size options, it’s key to know whether you want carry-on or checked luggage.

• Carry-on luggage (shop here) – Great for short trips and avoiding baggage fees. Typically fits in overhead bins and meets airline size limits. Carry-on luggage can include a personal item that fits under the seat in front of you including crossbody bags, totes, duffle bags and backpacks. If you do not want to check a bag, consider a carry-on and a personal item to maximize space and efficiency.

• Checked luggage (shop here) – Best for longer trips or when you need more space. Airlines allow larger suitcases, but weight restrictions and baggage fees may apply. Typically, these luggage choices will come in a medium (roughly 24-26 inches) and a large (about 28 to 30 inches) sizing.

Luggage Size Guide: What’s Best for Your Trip?

For a Weekend Getaway (1-3 days)

• Best option: Carry-on suitcase (our favorite, the Bugatti Wellington)

• Typical size: 18”-22”

• Why? Small, lightweight, and no checked bag fees. Most airlines will not apply fees for any carry-on items.

For a Week-Long Trip (4-7 days)

• Best option: Medium checked luggage (The soft case Siena Collection)

• Typical size: 24”-26”

• Why? More packing space while still easy to maneuver.

For a Long Vacation (2+ weeks)

• Best option: Large checked luggage (The durable Hamburg Collection)

• Typical size: 28”-30”

• Why? Room for extra outfits, souvenirs, and travel essentials.

For Family Travel or Overpackers (we know you’re out there, it’s ok)

• Best option: Expandable or nested luggage sets. Almost all Bugatti suitcases are expandable! (Shop Luggage Sets)

• Why? Flexibility for multiple travelers or added space when needed. Plus, if you buy a set you’re always matching no matter what combination of luggage you need for each trip.

Airline Size & Weight Restrictions: What to Know

• Carry-on: Most airlines allow 22” x 14” x 9”, but it varies—always check airline policies.

• Checked bags: Many airlines cap checked luggage at 50 lbs. (23 kg) before charging extra. We’re talking $100-$400 depending on the weight!
